Job Summary Lead the new product development, sustaining and innovation Electronic Engineering Teams to be the market leader in connected and non-connected security hardware residential and multi-family products. The Director will have leadership responsibility for: the new product development process of Electronic Connected Lock Products, Sustaining Engineering, Home Connect Zigbee and Z-wave products as well as APP based products that include BLE & WI-FI product integration and cloud based AWS product implementation and maintenance. Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • (20%) Develop and hire NPD engineering team members to be leader in taking to market products that lead in innovation for the home automations and connected lock product categories.
  • (15%) Evaluate the viability of application of technologies to consumer products. Develop product designs that integrate appropriate emerging and existing technologies.
  • (10%) Help new product teams manage risk and timelines to consistently launch new products per the agreed upon schedules with close collaboration with marketing, operations and quality functions.
  • (10%) Interaction with the various marketing organizations to develop new product platforms that meet consumer's and internal and external customers' needs.
  • (10%) Develop relationships with 3rd parties and manage workflow to effectively launch new products when internal resources are not sufficient.
  • (10%) Establishment of and improvements to the processes, methods, tools, and skills of the Engineering team. This will include the utilization of 6-sigma, Agile, test automation and other data driven methods to optimize product designs.
  • (5%) Scope definition and management of externally sourced design activities. Provide oversight and motivation of a staff of Software, Firmware, App Developers and Test Engineering technologists. Ensure the staff is aware of new, emerging technologies and engineering methods while staying focused on achieving objectives the company.
  • (5%) Management of budgets, schedules, and personnel for the Engineering function.
  • (5%) Develop recommendations for capital, operating and staffing budgets. Collaborate with other directors in the development of a coordinated budget for Vice President Approval. Provide fiscal oversight of allocated resources, assets and expenses. Make necessary decisions to adjust for variations in projected budget income caused by fluctuating volumes and other external factors.
  • (5%) Lead employees through effective hiring, orientating, training, mentoring, and coaching. Provide ongoing recognition, feedback, and development, holding employees accountable for success. Identify and mentor future organizational leaders. Ensure appropriate resources are provided to employees. Develop a staffing plan that meets both customer expectations and financial constraints. Create an environment where employee feedback facilitates positive change.
  • (5%) Provide leadership to direct reports in the establishment of area plans, short/long term goals. Design functional area infrastructure and changes to supporting processes and systems. Develop solutions to functional-area challenges. Set, implement, and complete functional area goals. Education and Experience Profile
    • Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering or other related fields.
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Product Engineer for successfully marketed consumer durable, medical, automotive, or recreational products. Experience managing people and processes.
    • Experience driving global cross-functional initiatives.
    • Demonstrated skills of developing a team designing, developing, and testing products in the home automation or smart home product categories.
    • Portfolio of work from initial concept to final engineered solution with demonstrated successful engineering skills. This includes utilization of Software and Firmware development tools.
    • Technical leader that successfully converted strategic direction, customer/consumer desires, and technologies into successful products.
    • Experience working with external technology development organizations to develop products that effectively utilize the technologies.
    • Effective interaction with engineering and technology leadership to integrate viable technology into product designs.
    • Planning and utilization of Design using Agile methodology and other processes that facilitate the optimization of engineered products
    • Clearly demonstrated ability to develop product designs to meet product cost targets.
    • Effective planning and management of vertically integrated internal and outsourced engineering activities. Desired Education :
      • Post Graduate degree in engineering or technical discipline a plus Required Skills
        • Experience managing APP development and cloud-based product development teams
        • Knowledge of Imbedded Firmware programming as well as Electronic Hardware Design.
        • Strong design conception ability that is clearly communicating a product road map developed around Home Automation Products.
        • Experience with Design tools using agile work streams as well as Software and Hardware and testing planning and tracking tools.
        • Knowledgeable with ZigBee and Z-Wave system protocols and certification process.
        • Familiar with developing products for use with IOS and Android Applications as well as WI-FI integrated and Bluetooth products.
        • Knowledgeable with FCC certification and wireless product testing.
        • Knowledge of Asian manufacturing methods. Experience working with Asian vendors is an advantage.
        • Problem solving ability. Able to quickly understand scope and constraints of a problem and to develop solutions that meet timing, cost, business requirements, and consumer needs.
        • Patent process knowledge - strong understanding of the patent process. Ability to read and understand patents. Able to write clear design disclosures.
        • Ability to clearly communicate ideas, processes, and technical requirements through effective written, graphic, and oral methods.
        • Demonstrated skills and methods of working with a wide variety of functional organizations to engineer products that appropriately balance the desires of consumers with technology capabilities and production costs.
        • Strong team leadership skills for groups of creative engineers and technocrats.
        • Strong ability to attract and hire and retain talented Engineering Team members.
        • Departmental planning and management including personnel and budgets/expenditures. Working conditions are normal for an office environment. The position requires periods of high levels of output through high productivity and extended work time. Domestic and international travel is required for this position. This will include travel to Mexico and Asia. The position will provide technical, schedule, and budgetary oversight for a team of 10 to 30 technical professionals in the Software, Firmware and Test disciplines.
