Job Summary

The Firmware Engineering Manager is a key member of the electronics organization and will be leading a great team of embedded software/firmware engineers. You and your team are responsible for all firmware activities related to the development of new products from initial concepts through all the development and integration phases and release to production, in addition to sustaining existing products. You will work closely with stakeholders and your team to set development direction, architecture choices and plans to meet overall projects' and organizational goals.

As a member of the electronics leadership team, you will work closely with your peers and stakeholders in developing new solutions, products, concepts, features and the integration of our smart electronic locks into our ecosystem and our partners' ecosystems. You will also identify and manage external development partners to complement the team and cover resource gaps as needed.

Ideal candidate will have the technical leadership required to mentor and guide the team, set technical direction, challenge status quo and drive quality results with the right processes and tools. Someone who has been in the trenches developing firmware with increasing responsibilities and moved into management over time.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • (20%) Provides technical leadership in embedded software engineering including integration with electro-mechanical hardware, mobile applications and Cloud for IoT type of products
  • (20%) Directs firmware team to create and prototype design concepts, research solutions for feasibility, create detailed design requirements and/or specifications, make technical trade-offs, deliver quality and production level firmware, and participates in design and code reviews to ensure the best possible solution
  • (15%) Responsible for identifying and planning engineering project resources (allocation of staff), budget and project timelines. Leads and coaches' team to meet project deliverables and timelines. Interacts with engineering managers and staff in the development and execution of projects.
  • (10%) Interacts closely with Engineering managers and team for project planning including schedule, scope and financials in addition to participating in strategic product planning processes throughout the year.
  • (10%) Works with team to identify and implement best practices, tools and processes in the spirit of continuous improvements, high quality and on-time execution.
  • (10%) Identifies and manages external 3rd party developers and/or companies to support and complement the team, close resource gaps to support the business needs. Project manages 3rd party engagements to meet deliverables.
  • (10%) Presents teams' progress, technical trade-off, strategies for current and future product roadmaps
  • (5%) Responsible for training and career development of direct reports and responsible for the teams' morale and productivity.
  • Understands and communicates HR policies and procedures and takes appropriate action to hold team accountable.
  • Other duties as required by supervisor.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% of the time

Education and Experience Profile

  • Minimum 2 years of software/firmware engineering management experience required
  • Minimum of 8 years' experience (experience in the Consumer Electronics industry with embedded software emphasis is a plus)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronic/Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field required

Required Skills

  • Product development experience with IoT devices and ecosystems utilizing Zigbee, Zwave, Bluetooth, WiFi or other wireless protocols
  • Experience leading an embedded software or firmware development team
  • Direct experience as a lead engineer delivering embedded software or firmware for consumer products from concept to release
  • Has led or contributed to SoC-level or micro-controller architecture designs and solutions
  • Experience with embedded software that interacts with mobile devices and cloud backends via Bluetooth (BLE) and WiFi
  • Experience in waterfall and agile development models and fully understands and can navigate the interdependencies between hardware, firmware, mobile and cloud backend teams. System understanding and experience of electronics projects involving hardware and embedded software including analog/digital processing, motors, micro-controllers and other electronics components and subsystems.
  • Sound knowledge of design practices, engineering principles, firmware development tools and processes
  • Experience interpreting marketing and customer requirements into detailed technical specifications and design guidelines
  • Familiar with wireless and RF protocols/designs and networked systems
  • Working experience in a multi-disciplinary environment preferably developing electro-mechanical products and strong hands-on experience
  • Excellent leadership skills with ownership mentality, can-do attitude and delivering to commitments
  • Good communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization
  • Able to create, understand and track to annual departmental budget.
  • Customer focused and aptitude to deliver high quality solutions and products
  • Well organized and excellent documentation practices
  • Experience with battery-operated consumer devices
